Similarities And Differences Between The Different Audience Theories.

Reception theory= how a text is read by its audience.

Uses and gratification= the audience are active and choose what type of text they want to watch and may have several different reasons for this.

Effects theory= the audience are passive and get manipulated by hegemonic values.

Similarities between all the theories:
* the uses and gratification and reception theory say that the audiences are both active.
* the effects theory and the uses and gratification theories are both very simple.
* the reception and effects theories both talk about hegemonic values but interprate them in a different way.

Differences between all the theories:
* the uses and gratification theory talks about why the audience read a text in a certain way whereas the reception theory talks about the meaning of a text can be interprated in differents ways .
*the theories on uses and gratification and reception talk about an active audience on the other hand the effects theory mainly talks about a passive audience.
*the effects theory talks about how an audiences are manipulated into hegemonic values but the other theories don't.

2) WatchDog-Talks about everyday crimes/topics.

3)State Opening of Parliament-Discusses Politics.

4) Panorama-Investigation into the nuclear market that sold Iran and North Korea technology.

5) Unreported World-about the political future of Lebanon after the devasting Israeli bomardment.

By providing programmes such as Panorama and Unreported World, the media is acting as a fourth estate as it is providing us with information of politics, e.g. parliament etc. This is how we can show that this week the media has acted as a fourth estate.

Marxism

Marxist believe society is made up of two classes, the working who are known as the plorateriats and the upper class who are known as the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie exploit the plorateriats for their labour so the bourgeoisie can make a profit.
